Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE)

Experimental Nuclear Fusion Reactor Turnover Frame 13.5t SWL

Customer: Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE)

Culham Energy is the UK’s national laboratory for fusion energy. It hosts the Joint European Torus (JET), the world's largest magnetic confinement plasma physics experiment. JET is a key research facility for EUROfusion, the joint European project on nuclear fusion energy.

PLS won the contract to design and manufacture two ring-shaped frames for handling experimental nuclear fusion reactors.

These frames are designed to lift and turn the reactors from horizontal to 90° for the 3 stages of the experiments. This means the reactors will have 3 different masses and 3 different COGs.

The turnovers passed all CCFE’s strict quality controls and tests, focused on dimensional accuracy, structural safety and welding procedures.
